How to get started:
Baby signs are easy to learn and you don't have to learn all the signs at once. Start with the 5 basic characters: Food, Drink, More, Done and Sleep. Use the characters in the context of what you are doing, and repeat them often, but never use more than 1 character per character. sentence to keep it simple.
Once you (note – not your baby) know these signs, start learning some more signs. Choose them based on what interests your baby. It can, for example, be a dog, cat, bird or a pacifier, a teddy bear, grandma, or maybe you would like to learn the sign for changing a nappy. There are no limits to how many signs you can use with your baby, so use as many as you can in your everyday life. Your baby will pick up the baby signs that she or he needs and wants to use. Therefore, do not give up if your child does not want to use the first 5 signs - it may be that you already understand your child's signals for these needs and that your child does not need to tell you at all. On the other hand, it could be that she has just seen a cool motorcycle drive by that she wants to tell you about.
Rules to remember:
• Start with some basic characters
• Learn signs for the things your baby shows interest in
